We all know it’s a bit of a pain being asked to write a match report after the game, but it’s also quite an honour so I’m going to give it a go. It’s a bit worrying at the start but I’m trying to remember that it’s a good ‘Brain training’ exercise as mentioned by Simone in a previous report.
Well, let’s start.
British Airways Women's FC continued their winning streak to the season with a 2-0 win at home to Comets’ stated the local Guardian paper about our victory!
That Sunday was not like any other days we played on. It was a Birthday Day for two of our players- Preeti and Nav!
No pressure, but we all knew that the victory had to come our way no matter what!
During the pre match meeting numerous supporters, guests, coaches and players had a chance to join in a happy birthday sing-song which was well organised by Happy.
The warm up part involved a gigantic ‘Birthday’ balloon (see above) being dragged behind Nav’s back along the pitch.
To get all details right I decided to include the Guardian story-(and to save me trying to remember it)!.
Being late with a match report doesn’t help to get all details right.
Sorry it took so long guys!
Here it goes:
BA had to battle hard against a strong Comets side who pressed them hard for 90 minutes. BA created numerous chances and it wasn't long before Heidi Kuivaniemi-Smith in her first match this season scored making it one nil to BA after 20 minutes
BA could have finished the game off in the first half but could not convert another chance after having numerous chances to score. Ailsa Burrow hitting the woodwork came the closet to get another for BA.
Comets started the second half brightly which much of the possession but the BA defence, with Captain Preeti Johal leading the back four, ensuring that Comets could not create any clear chances to trouble BA's keeper Svitlana Klachko.
Mid-way into the second half BA pressed hard to a second goal and got it when Nav Johal hit the post and Burrow slotted in the rebound to give BA a 2 goal cushion.
All I can add and remember is that there were many players feeling ill on that day. During the half time talk, Gerry was quite disappointed and asked whether it was due to late nights or drinking the night before. We all reassured him that it wasn’t the case and we were genuinely ill (well, quite a few of us were). This I believe reduced our ability to perform at our best which was reflected in the score line.
But at the end of the day, a win is a win! And a whitewash at that! Three league points!
Well done girls and lets keep it up!
