Game: Hadley Ladies v BAWFC (League Cup 1st round)
Author: Petra
Player of the match: Katie Y
10 o’clock kick-off (ouch)
So, on Char’s birthday we were up early and off to a cup game against 1st division side Hadley. And what an exciting match it was to watch! Lee and I were comparing injury notes before kick-off - disappointed not being able to play, but certainly not disappointed with the BAWFC performance that we were about to witness (and that I am having trouble putting into words, so apologies for missing out your spectacular save, clearance, run, shot, header - yes, there were a few! - corner, pass, movement etc)
Here we go, we lined up as follows
GK: Svitlana
LB: Jo
CB: Preeti ©
CB: Simone (thanks for bringing birthday cake - yum)
RB: Danni
LM: Nav
CM: Katie
CM: Ailsa (first League match for BAWFC - well done!)
RM: Birthday girl Char
CF: Mandip (first 90 minutes for BAWFC - well done!)
CF: Kirsty
SUBS: Sylvia (welcome back to the UK!) & Karen (who managed to get injured in the warm-up, ouch)
Supported by Gerry and Roger!
First half:
We were awake, we passed the ball around, we got into their half (a lot!), we worked for each other, we defended well and we created chances (some nice work on the right allowed Katie to take a shot that narrowly missed the target - shame :( And then (or was it the other way round?) we conceded a goal - very unlucky, but we kept going.
And we dropped back and we pushed up and we used the wings and it was a pleasure to watch (apart from the bit where Char hurt her head - ouch again). And then it was time for a breather and some half-time oranges. Phew.
Respectable half-time score Hadley 1 BAWFC 0
Second half:
We were back and we may have been getting tired, but we kept going: great BAWFC play at the back, in midfield and everywhere on the pitch (including the throw-ins) and then
- Kirsty was through one on one with the Hadley keeper who saved
- Katie’s shot was tipped over the bar by the Hadley keeper
- Ailsa’s ankle gave away and Sylvia came on
- Nav turned in the box and shot at the Hadley keeper
Oh, and did I mention: they scored a second goal?
But even 5 minutes before the end
- Mandip still managed a fantastic run down the left wing - only stopped by the Hadley keeper
So, we may have got knocked out of the cup, however, after an excellent team effort on the day, we left the ground feeling like winners....
May the season begin - come on BAWFC!
